Roadtrip 2016 Fall: Vancouver - Yakima - Bend - John Day River - Port Orford - Florence - Seaside - Vancouver

Day 23 - Arizona Ranch and Beach

The approach to the thinly disguised top-secret government research facility code-named "Arizona Ranch". The manhole cover in the middle of nowhere making a faint humming sound is always a dead giveaway.

Wendy and Emma prepare to cross the bridge of no return. Visitors to Arizona Ranch often enter, but never leave.

All visitors are required to "boot up" upon entry to Building 3.

The fully-functioning stargate portal in building 3 seems to lead to an earth-like world with nice lawns.

According to our instruments, the chimney is faintly radioactive.

Here's to looking at you looking at me looking at the very room where all the super secret decision making occurs.

Across the road, the Main Encryption Shed and Secure Mailbox.

Bullet holes through the glass are reminders of the perils that occur when word leaks to the outside world.

We always have a competition to photograph the cheapest advertised operational motel. Since we are on the expensive Oregon coast, this has a shot at the title. Last year's winner (in the Mojave Desert) was $24.95.

The atomic scientists are occasionally let out of their labs for a breath of fresh air and a chance to express their creativity.

OK this one is really nasty. They're trying to make this sound all nicey nicey - just be kind to one another and all will be fine. Nope. Read the first sentence and the word "rules" immediately pops into the vernacular.

And finally, the beach. Today's squalls are finally clearing.

A revival of last year's ritual: The Summit Snack. This really is the summit.

After the snack, the stick.

Evidence that it has indeed been very very soggy on the Wet Coast.

This one's not quite so eerie - just menacing.
